AHEAD of his final game at Anfield, Reds captain Steven Gerrard took one last trip around the sights of his home city before heading for LA Galaxy. Sort of.
A lifelike dummy of Stevie G was bundled into the back of a van in Blackpool and brought down the M6 in a PR stunt to promote the resort's waxworks.
"The 34-year-old was given a fitting tribute courtesy of Madame Tussauds Blackpool, when his wax figure caught a ferry across the Mersey for one last day in the sun visiting the sights in Liverpool," it says here. OK, that's enough sun.
The Stevie G effigy was taken to Anfield Stadium, where Gerrard has played since 1998, "proudly posing" beneath the words ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
Other stops on the farewell trip included the Liver Buildings, and the queue at Liverpool John Lennon Airport for the dearly departing footballer who will be touching down at Los Angeles Airport (LAX) later this summer.
The crowds gathered to wave him off at the gates, apparently, and "passers by did a double take when they realised it wasn’t the football star himself, but a perfect wax recreation".
Matthew Titherington, of Madame Tussauds Blackpool commented: “It will be sad to see Steven head to America, he is a true sporting legend, standing pride of place in our attraction. We wish him all the best at L.A Galaxy. He will always be a well loved part of our attraction.”
This weekend’s home tie against Crystal Palace will be Gerrard’s last for the club after 17 years, tickets for the match are being sold for as much as £1,300.
