MERSEYSIDE Police is warning elderly residents and their neighbours to be on their guard against bogus officials following a couple of distraction burglaries in Liverpool.
Officers are investigating two incidents where it is believed that the two same men have recently knocked on addresses of elderly woman in the Everton and Kirkdale areas of Liverpool.
The first incident took place at around 7.30 pm on Sunday 3 August. The men claimed to be from Liverpool Mutual Homes and asked for a pen and paper. One of the men entered the house and stole a quantity of cash, believed to be the woman’s pension.
The second incident happened on Monday 11 August at approximately 1.30 in the afternoon. The two men entered the house of an elderly woman and went to her bedroom, saying they were there to fit CCTV. A quantity of cash was taken.
One of the men is described as white, wearing glasses and aged between 20 and 30-years-old. He is about 5’ 8” tall and of slim build and bald. He was wearing a light blue T-shirt, black trousers, a baseball cap and had a black hip bag around his waist.
The second man is described as white and having very fair skin with close shaven hair. He was the same height as the first man but older. He had a sunken jaw, no teeth and was wearing a dark polo type T-shirt and black trousers.
Detective Sergeant James May said: "This type of crime is shameful, when vulnerable members of our community are targeted in this way. The elderly women in these incident have been left in total shock.
"It is vital that people are on their guard against these types of offenders and not to open your door to anyone you don’t know. It is important to check the identity of any stranger who calls. Genuine callers will not mind waiting, while you check their credentials."
A full investigation into these incidents are ongoing and police are urging anyone with information to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
