Call Lane's Oporto is hosting XO supperclub throughout September, here's what to expect

Chances are you've already heard of XO by now - it's been on the lips of Leeds people-in-the-know, lingering like chilli oil for the past couple of months - or, failing that, you've seen their hyper-stylised dishes and emoji-filled bravado on their attention-grabbing Instagram.

It's the work of one chef, Bradford lad Jonathan Hawthorne, who has worked all over the world in three and two-star Michelin restaurants including Noma and Noma Australia, as well as a couple of one-star venues - talk about slumming it - and it has possibly the coolest origin story that we'll never be allowed to tell you...

The concept is loosely Asian-themed, but only by by chance - Hawthorne insists that the only "theme" is good food, and he cooks with ingredients and flavours that excite him, which currently happen to include lesser-loved cuts of meat, crowd-pleasing mashups, and flavours amped up through fermentation.

Having done stints at Mr Nobody and pop-ups at bars like Headrow House and Domino Club, XO has found a semi-permanent home in Call Lane's Oporto.

Armed with induction hobs and a makeshift kitchen, Hawthorne is turning the dive bar's gig room into a dining room for two services a night, every Thursday and Friday throughout September. £25 gets you the five course tasting menu which is subject to change depending on what's exciting Jonathan that week, with maybe a few surprises thrown in.

This being Oporto, there's a drinks package including two sakes and three cocktails that specially concocted to pair with the dishes (and also blow your lid off if the ones we tried were anything to go by).

Seatings are at 7pm & 9pm every Thursday and Friday throughout September, to book your space, email info@oportobar.co.uk or call 0113 245 4444.
