LEBANESE restaurant Comptoir Libanais has announced plans to open a new Leeds restaurant.
You don’t have to sacrifice comfort, style or authenticity of food just because the dining is casual
Having set up shop in over ten locations throughout London, before expanding to Manchester (where our Manchester Confidential colleagues described it as “jolly, doing a limited thing very well - and colourfully") the group is now bringing its 'Lebanese canteen' concept to Leeds.
Tony Kitous is the man who started it all, and is credited with ‘putting the glamour back into Middle Eastern cuisine’.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do” says Tony. “Food that’s affordable and easy to know - healthy, light, and you can enjoy it every day of the week”
And not just any day - any time of the day, too. Our Manchester Confidential reviewer even wondered if it might be the best breakfast in the city, which isn’t an accolade that your average Middle Eastern grill has to worry about finding room for on their mantlepiece.
Its meze-sharing concept has been wildly popular in the affluent South East, but Tony wasn’t exaggerating when he says it’s affordable - hummus, tabbouleh, baba ganoush and falafel can all be ordered for around £3-6; with bigger dishes like wraps, tagines, grills and Mana’esh (Lebanese pizza) not breaking the bank either.
Lebanese and Middle Eastern food has been present on Leeds' menus in souks and shawarma spots for ages, but up until now it’s been absent from the arena of casual dining experiences in a high-concept, design-led restaurant. We’re looking forward to seeing how it develops.
