Seel Street church to be restored by team behind The Monro
The former Alma de Cuba site on Seel Street is set to be the latest historic building to be transformed by the team behind The Monro.
For many years the site was St Peter’s Catholic Church, place of worship to the city’s Polish community before in 2005 it became Alma de Cuba, place of partying for the city’s celebrities.
Now it is being refurbished by the 1936 Pub Company, the team behind the refurbishment of Duke Street’s The Monro as well as The Vines, the Lime Street pub recently bestowed with the prestigious Historic England Conservation Award.
Mary Jane from the 1936 Pub Company said: “The Alma de Cuba/St Peter’s church site is a heritage building that will be a perfect addition to our pub family. The chance to develop a concept within a structure as special as St Peter’s church is an honour and an opportunity we simply couldn’t resist.
“Alma de Cuba has been a Liverpool institution for nearly 20 years, but good things reach a conclusion and we believe it’s time for a fresh approach to this historic site.”
Mary Jane continued: “We are planning something spectacular and dramatic, as the building’s heritage and scale demands, but at the same time familiar and accessible. Our re-imagined St Peter’s will welcome all.
“We are ultimately pub people and pubs are for everyone . Be assured, amidst the drama of the setting, our venue will still essentially be a great big pub, as per The Vines, that offers great drinks - a huge range of cask ales, craft beers and stouts, complimented of course by our locally sourced hot and cold pie selection.
“Our ethos is a pub ethos, we’re all about beers, pies and great pub jukebox tunes, and of course our prices will be pub prices.”
Work is now underway on refurbishing the site, with the venue set to reopen in November.
