THERE was a rum do with a difference when Almost Famous Liverpool went out to prove that as the city's trendiest eating joint it does more than get you burgered.

A tie-up with Havana Club rum saw Almost Famous's loveable drinks doyen Pedro stage a wacky taste event featuring Havana Club Selection De Maestro rum with the greatness of miracle fruit.

Liverpool Confidential operatives went along for the yo-ho-ho.

Miracle fruit’s real name is Synsepalum Dulcificum and it plays havoc with your tastebuds.

How so?

He explained that the miracle fruit berry has a low sugar content but contains a chemical called miraculin, which gives the perception of a strong added sweetness to anything eaten or drunk after it.

Putting our trust completely in the hands of a man who handed us a small white pill and told us to let it dissolve on our tongues, we sat and we waited.

He told Confidential: "This sensation is massively experienced with lemons and limes which are classically paired with rum, this is why I chose to work with Havana Club – Selection de Maestro. It has a slightly higher than normal ABV of 45% so the rich flavour comes through and allows you to taste the rum alongside some bits that might not usually go with rum, such as malt vinegar, dry white wine, salty crisps, hot sauce."

On the night, there were plenty of eager takers among AFB customers all eager to have their tongues twisted and messed with.

Pedro remarked: "I also did some different cocktails for the tasting but the clear favourite was the ZERO SUGAR DAIQURI  which was simply rum and lime juice but which tasted sweeter and juicer than most people had ever tasted."
