ALAN BLEASDALE, Willy Russell, Jimmy McGovern, Esther Wilson... just some of the big names in Liverpool theatre who came to playwriting way after the first flush of youth.
They brought a maturity and insight to their stage and TV work that may not have been possible earlier on in their lives.
Who knows for sure, but it can be said that in recent times the Everyman and Playhouse may have missed out by capping its playwright mentoring schemes at 25 years of age.
But ey up, it has been scrapped, giving more people than ever before access, training and skills in the art of playwriting.
The previous Young Writers’ Programme is to be replaced by two new schemes, the Everyman & Playhouse New Playwrights’ Programme and a Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) Writers Programme.
The Everyman & Playhouse New Playwrights’ Programme is a course for playwrights and theatre-makers in the Liverpool region, of any age, who wish to develop their playwriting craft.
The next intake of writers will begins this October at the Everyman Theatre with up to ten writers invited onto the programme following applications to join. They will work closely with the theatres’ literary department to develop their playwriting skills and knowledge, with a view to writing a full-length stage play.
