We’ve been eating our way around Liverpool again - here are this month’s top scoffs
Summertime, and the living is easy, and with the great weather it’s all about al fresco dining, colourful, healthy dishes and (mostly) light bites. You won’t go far wrong with any of these - all tried, tested and paid for by us over the last month. Hard life sometimes, innit?
Ravioli Tartufo - San Carlo (£14.65)
Handmade ravioli filled with Pecorino cheese and truffle with a cream, Parmesan and truffle oil sauce. And guess what tops it all off: yes, more truffle. A great dish on a great menu. Just don’t tell the gym instructor.
41 Castle St, Liverpool L2 9SH
32-day aged, 500g prime rib - Macello Meat House (£35)
There’s flesh, blood and there is theatre at this unassuming little steakhouse in south Liverpool, where they bring the beast to your table over a scorching skillet. This is one very special piece of beef.
16 Childwall Abbey Rd, Liverpool L16 0JN
Halloumi chips - Grilla (£5.95)
Delicious, deep fried, creamy and dangerous to know, this was a stand-out side order at a recent visit to the brand new Grilla in Mossley Hill. Owner Ektoras used to farm halloumi and is planning to set up his own Greek yoghurt business in the UK. But he could actually just make a mint selling this. Super good, super bad.
22 Hardman St, Liverpool L1 9AX
Breakfast Fruit Salad - Castle Street Townhouse (£7.50)
The ultimate feel good breakfast boost. Simply heaps of ripe strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, oranges and apples with a drizzle of honey and a scattering of walnuts and almond flakes. Nothing short of excellent. Just look at it.
25-27, Castle St, Liverpool L2 4TA
Angry Fried Chicken - Pen Factory (£6.50)
Who could possibly be anything but happy after this lovely little light lunch? A just-enough piece of tender chicken breast encased in a bone dry spicy batter and served with Singapore noodles and a zingy green salsa. Part of the two for £10 deal every day from 12pm-4pm.
13 Hope St, Liverpool L1 9BQ
Morcella de Burgos - Lunyalita (£6.75)
Spanish black pudding to you, or, more to the point, blood sausage as they call it over there. Made without meat although not vegetarian, this crumbly mix of onions, rice, lard, blood and spices is a delectable little number, all dressed up with some lightly battered onion rings and a slash of apple puree. Try it with a dry fino sherry.
Britannia Pavilion, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AD
Lamb Sunday roast - Cargo (£11.95)
Even the Liver Birds were eyeing this one up. The restaurant Sunday roast is a tricky beast when you are catering for scores of people over a long day. Even at 6pm this one was bang on with perfect roast Cyprus spuds, home made Yorkshire puds and ohhhh that gravy. A choice of beef, lamb or chicken and part of two courses for £15.95.
Alexandra Tower, 19 Princes Parade, Liverpool L3 1BD
Marco’s Summer Pudding - Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse (£5.50)
A belter of a take on the traditional bread pudding pudding, namely daspberry coulis, brioche loaf, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Enjoy it with a bottle of something cheerful and go dizzy as those blood sugar levels soar. It’s part of the MPW summer set menu: Lunch: two course, £17.50. Evening: two course, £16.95
10 Chapel Street, Liverpool L3 9AG
