The team behind Madre and Belzan launches its newest Liverpool venue
The team behind Madre and Belzan has launched a new venue at Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. Burnt Milk Hotel, in the dock’s Anchor Courtyard, will operate as a cafe, cocktail bar and wine shop, with a focus on casual dining and seasonal produce.
When the opportunity came up for us to take over the space we knew we couldn’t turn it down.
It’s a bijou venue which the owners say can accommodate up to 17 inside along with an outdoor seating area. Opening from 8am, Burnt Milk Hotel starts the day with Heart and Graft coffee alongside a selection of freshly made pastries from The Butterholic.
From lunchtime, bar snacks include bread and burnt shallot butter, gordal olives, charcuterie plates, guindilla peppers and anchovies, and artisan cheese, as well as eight-inch sub sandwiches on sourdough from Leila at The Bake Hub Artisan Bakery.
Belzan on Smithdown has gained a reputation for quality wines and that’s something which carries over at Burnt Milk Hotel - the wine is the star of the show here, sourced from five different suppliers who all pride themselves on being low intervention and environmentally friendly.
The wine menu features a wide range of organic, natural and classic wines, which will change regularly. Bottles will all be sold at retail price with a corkage fee to drink in, making high quality wine accessible for everyone, and ranging from £10 per bottle and corkage all the way up to the premium end with some rare and unique bottles too. A wine subscription service - the Burnt Milk Hotel Wine Club - ideal for wine fans looking to try new varieties, is set to launch in December.
Cocktails have been given a twist with some unusual ingredients and playful names on the list. They also serve a quirky selection of liqueurs and spirits, as well as sub-zero martinis straight from the freezer (two drinks max, not for the faint-hearted. Trust us.)
On weekends, an eclectic soundtrack of upbeat disco, deep house and hip hop will set the tempo, with guest chefs occasionally invited to offer small plate specials, along with afternoon wine tastings.
The intimate space has minimalist styling with Scandi influences and a floral centrepiece designed by Liverpool florist, Mary Mary Florals. Visitors can hang out at the bar inside or spill out onto the dock’s sunny Anchor Courtyard where its sister brand Madre is also located.
Co-founder Chris Edwards, said, “When the opportunity came up for us to take over the space we knew we couldn’t turn it down. Burnt milk has different connotations within different cultures, it can mean prosperity and luck in some or a bad omen in others but essentially it all comes down to making the most of what you’ve got, and this is reflected in the Burnt Milk Hotel.
"It may be small, but the wine and produce is the top of its game and we can guarantee a visit to the hotel will leave you with a smile on your face."
Chris says that the venue will make the most of its outdoor space in Anchor Courtyard while the weather allows. A moveable partition inside will enable the venue to accommodate extra seating in autumn / winter and the long-term plan is to utilise an additional area to the side of the main bar.
