Everyman rep season is the toast of London
Everyman and Playhouse Artistic Director Gemma Bodinetz and playwright Lizzie Nunnery have won top gongs at this year’s prestigious UK Theatre awards.
Bodinetz scooped the best director prize in recognition for the much hailed inaugural repertory season at the Everyman, which saw full houses for its Fiddler on the Roof production.
The Everyman Company 2017 was the theatre’s first rep in 30 years. Fourteen actors performed five productions over five months including Fiddler on the Roof, Conquest of the South Pole, The Story Giant, The Sum and Romeo and Juliet.
Nunnery's Narvik, which tells of the love between a Norwegian woman and a Liverpool soldier in World War II, won the best new play award. Presented by Box of Tricks Theatre Co it was picked from an all female shortlist.
The awards, which celebrate creative excellence and the outstanding work across the land, were handed out at a bash in London’s Guildhall on Sunday 15 October.
Bodinetz said: “Our first season with a repertory company was an extraordinary undertaking by all those involved: my fellow directors, staff here in Liverpool and of course the actors themselves.
“Winning this award felt like an acknowledgement from the industry of what a momentous endeavour that had been. I was hugely honoured to receive it, especially with such brilliant nominees as competition.”
The company is set to return to the Everyman in Spring 2018, with full casting to be announced on Tuesday 7th November.
The season will include four plays this year with Paint Your Wagon, A Clockwork Orange, Othello and an adaptation of Peer Gynt, by Robert Farquhar, making up the full schedule.
Tickets will be available from Monday 13th November.
