Leeds Briggate was transformed into a catwalk 16-17 April - here are the highlights
What better way to launch Leeds International Festival than with some serious fashion inspiration? Transforming Leeds Briggate into a catwalk and makeup studio, we were treated to a parade of the latest styles from high-street and independent brands. However, it was the students who really stood out – with diverse and inspiring work coming through at three institutions, the future of fashion in Leeds is definitely in safe hands.
Here are some of our favourite shows from last weekend (15 -16 April)
Leeds College of Art
Leeds College of Art amped up the colour, texture and fun with its early evening showing. Boasting an array of wearable pieces amped up into full ‘power-costumes’, there were a fair few pieces we were coveting for our own wardrobe – the 80s inspired bomber jacket, flamenco top and of course, that statement pink fur. These lot are going far.
House of Fraser
A go-to destination for smart-casual and occasionwear, House of Fraser displayed it’s more youthful side with relaxed fits, cropped lengths and of course this season's hottest print, gingham. Standouts for us were a beautiful pop-art inspired midi skirt and a beautiful teal cropped jumpsuit – ideal for the office or dressing up for a night on the town.
Leeds Beckett University
Stepping away from the high-octane colour of the weekend’s other shows, Leeds Beckett made nature the centre of their delicate, vulnerable showing. With an abundance of romantic ruffles and clever use of materials (braided hair epaulettes anyone?), the level of craftsmanship and dexterity was obvious.
River Island
Pink was the order of the day at River Island. From blush dusters to a full three-piece suit, 2016’s patone colour of the year is still very much on trend. River Island has long been known for its affordable denim which was in abundance here – ripped knees, embroidery and daisy duke shorts provide plenty of options for the coming summer months.
Leeds University
Rounding out Saturday’s showing, Leeds University was an eclectic affair that mixed feminine dresses with sporty spring jackets. We loved the laser cut florals and feminist icon appliques, but the standout was definitely a beautiful ombre-skirted dress that wouldn’t look amiss amongst the halls of Selfridges.
