Especially when it’s at historic waterfront bar and bistro Ma Boyle’s, when brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday 10am to 2pm. A stone’s throw from the Pier Head and Royal Albert Dock, the traditional alehouse and eatery is celebrating 150 years, so it’s rich with atmosphere – not to mention the smells of delicious home-cooked food emanating from the kitchen.

Brunch-wise, there’s plenty to pick from. Eggs Benedict with smoked streaky bacon, homemade hollandaise and peppery watercress, for example. Or Welsh Rarebit, a molten cheesy treat on doorstop toast. Proper beans and buttered sourdough or crispy golden Eggy Bready, fluffy buttermilk pancakes or one of any number of combinations of posh toasted sarnies.

Of course, we’re talking bottomless brunch here – and there are also the big plates of Full English and its vegetarian or vegan counterparts, all with Ma’s homemade hash, fried field mushrooms, slow-roasted cherry tomatoes and more if you still have space…
