A 51-YEAR-OLD man was arrested following a five hour stand-off in a house in Waterloo last night, which saw armed police, firefighters, paramedics, the National Grid and the police helicopter called to the scene.

The huge emergency services operation in Oxford Drive began at about 5.30pm when there were reports of a man in an "agitated state" inside the semi-detached home.

A cordon was put in place and Oxford Drive was closed while officers and negotiators engaged with the man.

Neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution. Residents were joined by scores of onlookers who gathered after reports on social media which included unconfirmed accounts of gunshots inside the property.

At around 10.20pm, officers arrested the man from Waterloo on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He was taken to a police station in Merseyside to be interviewed.

No one was injured during the incident, however minor damage was caused to the inside of the house, believed to be the result of a small fire.
