OF all the forms of home cooking/entertaining, the Great British Barbecue is the one that threatens to ratchet up the tension.
The shopping. The marinating. Lighting the bloody thing. Keeping it lit. Presenting chicken drumsticks without poisoning everyone. The shattered illusions when it inevitably starts pouring down. It’s a hassle. You know it. You'd have been better off with a fish finger butty on orange Warburtons.
Now here’s a good idea.
Last night, Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel, on Regent Road, launched its Colonnade BBQ experience which will run every weekend until September.
It takes place outdoors, but a drop of rain wont stop play. That’s because it’s under the cover of the historic colonnaded terrace of The Grade II North Warehouse, designed by Jesse Hartley and built in 1855
There was a steel band and the drinks flowed. Through the billowing smoke, one mulled the magnificent Tobacco Warehouse and the gigantic crane poised over its innards.
You don't get that, exactly, in your back garden in Huyton.
With all hands on deck, the food looked pretty impressive too: rare breed pork with courgette fries, roasted leg of lamb with pitta, plus an Aberdeen Angus and horseradish burger. Obviously it's all freshly cooked, the menu designed by the Titanic’s head chef, Gill Moss, and her team. It's all you can eat for £15.
There's also an appetising looking salad hut that includes home made hummous and tzaziki, tangy citrus or classic Caesar salad, as well as watermelon with quinoa and a sweet potato salad with walnuts and mustard. Lettuce is, naturally, iceberg.
There are two pop up bars serving chilled prosecco and a variety of rums. The hotel stocks more than 60 varieties from around the world so it would be silly not to. And guests can "pimp" their drinks, personalising them with exotic fruits and nectars.
Brian Connor, general manager of Titanic Liverpool said: “We anticipate the Colonnade BBQ to be immensely popular with both hotel guests and Liverpool residents alike."
He added: "Combining expertly prepared menus, innovative drinks and the best location to dine alfresco overlooking the cool waters of Stanley Dock, it’s the perfect place to be when the mercury rises!”
Or not.
