Cake and cocktail one-nighter with Manchester baking queen

The news that a big pudding lover who has been making waves in Manchester is set to stir things up in Liverpool might sound like the latest Wayne Rooney headline, but it actually refers to Charlotte O’Toole of Manchester cake specialists Bake-O-Rama.

O’Toole is bringing her celebrated Pudding Club dessert-fest to Slim’s Pork Chop Express on Thursday September 14, giving the Seel Street venue’s sweet-toothed visitors a chance to enjoy five carefully crafted courses, four of which are afters.

The menu is apparently being kept top secret until the day, but organisers say that diners will kick things off with a savoury starter, followed by four desserts including “warm, hot and frozen dishes with experimental flavourings”.

Although Slim’s Pork Chop Express is well known for its deeply savoury line-up of Chinese-American inspired dishes, the team is also getting involved in the dessert bonanza by creating a selection of cocktails designed to “complement the flavours and textures within each of the courses”.

The Bake-O-Rama Pudding Club has been running one-off events in a range of venues for a couple of years. Although O’Toole says she is a fan of traditional puddings, the venture also gives her the opportunity to unleash her dessert-based creativity. The menu at the Slim’s Pork Chop Express event will apparently include influences from “America, Japan and Mexico”, though disappointingly, there’s no mention of the heavenly puddings produced in comprehensive school canteens circa 1978 – the historical highpoint of global pudding production.

Still, for anyone who wants an excuse to eat nothing but dessert for tea, the Slim’s Pork Chop Express Pudding Club promises to confer all the permission you need.

For one night only, you don’t have to wait until you’ve forced down your vegetables. This is pure pudding-based pleasure, guaranteed.
