Liverpool-based baking ingredient’s manufacturer, Renshaw, has ruffled a few feathers by creating a very different Christmas cake for the festive season.
After hearing experienced baker Trish Clarke, of T&C Cakes Leicester, had received no orders for traditional fruit cakes this year, the UK’s largest manufacturer of ready to roll icing cooked up a creative plan to commission a festive bake with a difference – a Christmas Turkey Cake!
Renshaw, which is head-quartered on Crown Street, provided Trish with the Ready to Roll Icing and marzipan needed to create a 10kg dinner table centre piece that looks exactly like a Christmas turkey and all the trimmings.
Taking a week to create, Trish’s incredibly life-like turkey dinner comes with all the accompaniments of the iconic family meal, including roast parsnips, chestnuts and potatoes, peas, carrots and of course – the divisive sprouts!
Renshaw Managing Director, Robin Mountain, who supplied Trish with the huge quantities of icing and marzipan needed to create her big bird, said of the cake: “Cake decoration and baking has been one of the biggest trends of 2013, capturing the nation’s imagination with cakes so creative they’re seen as works of art. Trish has a really individual style and she’s certainly risen to the challenge with her turkey cake being far from the traditional!
“We at Renshaw have definitely noted a move away from the classic Christmas fruit cake, with more people keen to experiment with style and decoration. Trish’s creation shows the fun you can have with sugarpaste and she’s created a type of sprout that everyone will love!”
Trish, who has been making cakes for 20 years, said of her less-than-poultry effort: “After getting no orders for fruit cakes this year, I decided it was time to do something different to get people talking about the sweeter side of Christmas.
“Christmas dinner is so many people’s favourite meal and everyone loves cake – why not combine the two?”
Renshaw’s Turkey Cake creation is made completely of cake and is decorated with Ready to Roll Icing and marzipan. All elements of the 10kg platter are edible, including the cranberry sauce, serving spoon and sugarpaste pot.
