EASYJET says it will help 7,000 fliers get up, up and away out of Liverpool today, as the big Christmas exodus from the UK gets under way.

The budget airline says "Mad Friday" is going to be the busiest day in its history, processing 115,000 passengers across its British airports.

More number crunching? Liverpool John Lennon Airport says 165,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport over the two week Christmas and New Year holiday period – an increase of around 10px over last year.

And if that wasn't enough fun, airport security are asking people travelling with Christmas presents in hand luggage to bring them unwrapped to "avoid disappointment at the security search point and to help keep security queues to a minimum".

As the school Christmas holidays begin, families from across the region are expected to start to head off on flights this coming weekend. The airport says they will be travelling to a mix of destinations.

Popular are winter ski destinations, the Canary Islands and southern Spain and city break destinations with Christmas markets, such as Amsterdam, Geneva and Paris.

The airport, hoping to put people in the festive mood, will also be staging a ‘Festive Funday’ today with Santa available for selfies.

Robin Tudor, Head of PR for JLA commented, “We expect this to be the busiest Christmas and New Year getaway in recent years as thousands of passengers pass through over the festive period taking advantage of the convenience of flying via Liverpool.

We’ve even managed to get Santa to be on hand once again before he dashes off back to the North Pole ahead of his own big getaway on Christmas Eve.”
