Can you take the heat?
IT might be at the mercy of the elements but St Luke’s church is set to become the hottest place in town - by opening its doors to all things chilli.
A two-day spice fest, called “Chilli Carnival”, will feature chilli-eating competitions, cooking shows and cocktails on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13.
Visitors can expect market stalls and chilli-inspired street food traders alongside entertainment including jazz bands, drummers, dancers and, obviously, fire performers.
Organised by Bond Events Group, whose team have worked on Chinese New Year, Liverpool Arab Arts Festival and Laces Out, the festival comes to the Bombed Out Church as part of a “five-figure sum investment”.
Director Jay Ogugua said: “Our inspiration for Chilli Carnival came from the desire to add something truly unique to Liverpool’s extensive events calendar paired with our team’s die-hard appreciation for all things spicy."
The event is being sponsored by Encona Sauces and names that have signed up include Yukti, and Eat Up Gud.
Organiser Laura Cotter says: “We’re particularly excited for our daily chilli eating competitions, hosted by ChilliBob’s Farm, whereby participants will test their endurance with a variety of spice levels. The winner will be rewarded with £80 cash and an Encona Chilli Hamper, with the runner up also receiving a special prize.
“As part of our partnership with St Luke’s Church, we will also be going on to host our monthly market, ‘The Bombed Out Market’, within the church starting from Sunday, March 25.”
Tickets for the May event are £5 per day or £8 for a weekend pass.
