When?
Available from 12pm and all night Monday to Thursday, 12 - 7pm Friday.
We turned up last Thursday evening, after giving them half an hour's notice.
What's on offer?
Teriyaki chicken.. shin of beef ragu with pasta, roasted red pepper and tomato risotto grilled sea bass on tomato, lime, chilli and coriander dressed noodles...Steak frites with slow roast tomatoes and rocket... In fact, a choice of four starters, six mains and four desserts.
Chicken LaksaTo start
Ah yes, good old Thai fishcakes. But look at them (main pic). They contain...fish, lots of fish. Salmon mainly, in this instance, and lots of salmon means lots of flavour, particularly when combined with lime, coriander and a dash of nam pla. These three were crisp and crunchy on the outside, revealing a light chilli and ginger kick. To moderate the sparks: a sweet chilli jam.
If you didn't know tomatoes were in season, here an entire vine appears to have been plucked to bring you a tumble of red and yellow ones on a thick wodge of bruscetta with mozzarella. It presents a riot of colour and the sweet taste of summer. Even if the weather persists in doing its damnedest to prove otherwise.
Main event
Plenty of freshly cooked mussels, prawns, squid in the seafood linguine came in a deep puddle of white wine reduced with chilli, garlic and more of those new baby plum tomatoes. A great dish for a light night.
Chicken, tiger prawns and cashew coconut laksa was creamy and generous in all the signature elements. Request it with extra fire power, the resulting punch is considerable, and mop it all up with lashings of lovely coconut rice.
Puds
Blackberries and custard like you never tasted them before turned the classic crème brulee into a purple haze.
But for an elegant finish it had to be the chocolatey chocolate truffle cake crushed “hokey pokey” (honeycomb toffee to you) vanilla ice cream.
Wine
We could have chosen a bottle of house for a tenner, but decided to upgrade to a £17.95 southern French La Croix sauvignon blanc from an impressive list: crisp, dry and fruity - a bit like the company.
All in all
Plenty to choose from, and we chose well. Three courses and a decent bottle of wine for under £50 for two.
Chicken laksa with extra chillies
This is a keen deal for shoppers, office workers, early (midweek) revellers and anyone who likes to eat in an unhurried, ambient venue that retains its handsome surroundings.
