Former church on Seel Street now a grand beer hall

St Peter’s Tavern has now opened on Seel Street following an impressive refurbishment.

Originally built in 1788 as a Roman Catholic church, the building had a storied history before being deconsecrated in 1976 and, following decades of disuse, was transformed into a restaurant and bar, Alma de Cuba, in 2005.

When the Cuban-themed bar closed in September of this year, the 1936 Company - known for restorations of pubs like The Vines and The Monro  - took on the site, “our greatest challenge to date.”

Senior 1936 Pub Company spokesperson, Mary Jane King said: “The response to our renovations of The Vines and most recently The Monro on Duke street has been hugely gratifying. We embarked on our pub ‘mission’ over two years ago with the establishment of the Red Lion on Slater St and then The Green Man on lark lane.

“People seemed very happy with what we were attempting to do - put pubs back front and centre as the essential social spaces in an historic city. Brewers, local and beyond, have also been delighted that we played such a significant role in reviving cask ale in Liverpool.

“The early success of our pub project gave us the confidence to open the White Hart and Engineer pubs on Hope Street and has ultimately brought us to the point where we [could] take on our greatest challenge to date - the revival of the former ‘Alma de Cuba’ , at the site of the 250 year old St Peter’s church.”

I visited on Thursday (14 November) the day after it opened, much like I did when The Monro opened, and while I was very impressed with the Duke Street pub, I was truly taken aback by the work done to the building, calling it “a marvel of refurbishment”.
