Ice climbing, axe throwing and dancing in the dark... Who says you need a gym to get fit?

It’s only a few days in to the New Year and already my resolutions are slipping. Tone up, wind down, cut out this, eat more of that. I’m already exhausted.

If you too are flailing at the thought of hitting the gym alongside hundreds of fellow newbies, then it’s perhaps time to find your fitness fix in something a little more interesting.

From lobbing axes to trampoline classes, these are the alternative workouts that will make you yearn for your fitness gear throughout 2018.

Dancing in the Dark, Chorlton

For those of us less body confident, the thought of hitting the gym, rolls in tow, whilst pretty fit bits flaunt about in crop tops seems like borderline abuse. Whilst gym bunnies are no doubt more concerned with what they’re doing than watching you try to unhook your wedgey mid-treadmill, the niggling thoughts of looking silly can put people off the gym altogether. Fortunately, Chorlton’s dancing in the dark offers a judgement-free, fun-fuelled workout where silliness and sweat is guaranteed. There’s no booze, zero inhibitions and the lack of lighting means that it doesn’t matter if you boogie like Beyoncé or your uncle Barry – no one can see you anyway. Participants pay a £3.50 entry fee, before gearing up with glowsticks and busting moves for a solid hour in total darkness, totting up 8,000 steps per session.

Axe throwing

Don’t throw stuff at the walls – it’s the life lesson every kid learns after scribbling their artistic talent on the blank canvas of their bedroom walls. So, imagine how good it would feel to not only throw stuff at the walls, but to hurl sharp-edged axes? Whistle Punks at the Great Northern Warehouse lets you do exactly that. For £20 (£25 peak), participants can enjoy an hour and half axe-traveganza featuring axe-throwing training tips and essential safety before a testing tournament. Axes are thrown at targets – photos of exes are sadly prohibited.
