Head to the Med via Black Olive Grill – where Darijo Rimac has brought a taste of the Croatian ‘konoba’ experience to Shaw Road in the heart of Heaton Moor. He’s run Tipico Old Town taverna in Rovinj on Croatia’s Istrian peninsula for the last 10 years, and now he’s opened here.
Darijo can’t wait for you to try out authentic Croatian-style cooking along with wines imported from Istria, just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy’s Venice. As Black Olive’s name suggests, the grill is an important part of the Croatian kitchen, so expect plenty of fresh fish and meats, including 28 day dry-aged steaks.
Croatian cuisine is also hot on truffles – the Motovun forests boast some of the highest concentrations of truffles in the world – and the traditional truffle pasta is on the menu here, as is truffled cow’s cheese, which pairs well with the local ham, air-cured in the Bura wind. Wines, well there are plenty, and desserts, including homemade honey-drizzled cheesecake, are just as delicious.
