The little-known artworks of the late and legendary novelist, Dame Beryl Bainbridge, have been attracting fans from far and wide to the Museum of Liverpool since they went on show last month.
Beryl Bainbridge, Painter is a unique collection of 15 paintings by the multi Booker-nominated author, displayed together for the first time on her home turf. It continues until April 28.
"She may not have had any formal training, but Beryl's paintings reveal a vibrant and exuberant style that mirrored her distinctive personality and storytelling technique," says curator Paul Gallagher.
Success and critical acclaim in the world of literature eclipsed Formby-born Bainbridge’s lifelong passion as an artist, but now that bulb is fully switched on at the Museum's Skylight Gallery.
Five signed copies to give away...
Many artworks can be linked to books such as Harriet Said, A Weekend With Claude, The Birthday Boys and The Girl in the Polka Dot Dress, which was published after her death.
Psiche Hughes, a friend for nearly 50 years, who helped mount the exhibition, wrote Beryl Bainbridge: Artist, Writer, Friend, and she will be signing copies of this excellent volume.
"While her writing career was never smooth, she found painting to be a relaxing and exhilarating experience, which had close interconnections with her life and writing," said Hughes.
"Painting was as much a part of her as her novels, and being able to let people see this side of her is a great testament and celebration of her life and very rewarding for those who knew her."

Beryl Bainbridge thinks she's going to die at the age of 71, because everyone in her family died when they were that age. This warm, intimate and uniquely personal film, made by Beryl's eldest grandson Charlie Russell, follows Beryl as she lives out her 'last year', prepares for her death and tries to write her final novel.
60 minutes in length. Recorded in 2003, the film was first broadcast in 2007. It was shown again in 2010 soon after her death.
