IF your child has a habit of asking tricky questions such as what makes the sun yellow, and why do the stars only shine at night, this family day out could give you some relief.

Explore the wonders the universe, listen to the sound of the Big Bang and find out about the Lovell Telescope

At the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, young and old can explore the wonders of the Solar System, find answers to mind-blowing questions and get up close to the huge Lovell Telescope.

Start your visit in the Planet Pavilion exploring the giant clockwork orrery, test your knowledge with interactive games, and discover the Planet Path which takes young scientists on a journey of fun, educational challenges.

Then head to the beautiful Gardens and take a journey through time around the Galaxy Garden, burn off some steam in the space playground and explore tree collections from around the world.

Next up, go and find out how the universe began in the Space Pavilion. In here, you can discover what a black hole is, listen to the sounds of the Big Bang, and find out about the Lovell Telescope.

Finally, go and see the giant telescope for yourself. Walk around it, discover how it works, and have a go on the popular Whispering Dishes.

The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre has family-friendly events throughout the year, many of which are included your entry ticket. Over half term there's a Snowballs in Space science show, and a Look Inside Space activity day.

There's also a range of events for adults who are curious about the stars, held throughout the year. See the Jodrell Bank Events calendar.

The centre has a café, a picnic area and free parking and it's only 30-40 minutes drive from Manchester. Family tickets start from £20.
