Len Grant has documented Manchester for the last 30 years. Through his photographs and, more recently, sketches he has followed the city’s regeneration during a period of unprecedented transformation.
This prize includes his very latest book, Regeneration Manchester, 30 years of storytelling, produced during lockdown, in which he brings all his projects together in one 176-page retrospective volume. It follows the construction of The Bridgewater Hall, The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North. It features Len’s amazing images of the rebuilding of the city centre following the IRA bomb of 1996. And it includes the regeneration of Hulme, the beginning of New Islington and the transformation of East Manchester and of Ancoats. Also included is Arena! from 1995, the first of his 25+ books, that charts the building of the Manchester Arena above the railway lines at Victoria Station. For The Rusholme Sketcher he spent over 12 months perched on his stool on the streets of what he describes as the city’s ‘most vibrant neighbourhood’. The fourth book in the giveaway takes us right up to date with his depiction of Mayfield, Manchester’s latest regeneration success story.
