Special set menu showcasing seasonal meats
HEAD to chic Cheshire countryside bolthole the boutique Alderley Edge Hotel on 23 November, and you’re in for a game-changer of a menu. Well, a game-taster of a menu, to be precise, with a special seasonal five-course tasting menu.
The chefs are renowned for their exciting and innovative cooking and the classic British dishes with a modern twist that are now coming out of the kitchen and into the newly facelifted AEH restaurant.
So to push the envelope even further, for one night only, they're bringing to the table a Seasonal Game Tasting Menu. We’re in the heart of game season, says John Scott, General Manager, and it’s time to celebrate. The menu will feature the best local game – cooked to perfection – to give you a unique chance to enjoy all the rich and delicious flavours to the max.
The main course of salt-aged venison, roast celeriac and sloe-gin gel (try saying that after a couple of St Emilions) was Gordo’s favourite savoury course. “Bit of a mouthful, but that dish is particularly good.
To get a sneak preview, our very own Gordo went along to see what's being dishing up on the night and – spoiler alert – his standout dishes were the venison followed by the rum-poached pineapple, coconut sorbet and garden mint post-main pre-dessert palate-cleanser.
Opening with a tea-smoked Goosnargh duck teamed with its classic friend flavours of beetroot and orange, things are looking good from the start. This was followed up by a ballotine of pigeon served with puy lentils and caramelised shallots – a tender and moist stuffed leg parcel and plenty of autumnal flavours.
The main course of salt-aged venison, roast celeriac and sloe-gin gel (try saying that after a couple of St Emilions) was Gordo’s favourite savoury course. “Bit of a mouthful, but that dish is particularly good,” he managed between bites, pointing at it with his fork. Hot on its heels came that pineapple plate we mentioned. “That was quite brilliant,” affirmed Gordo, “because it cleansed your palate very well.”
Onto pud, and, gazing at the final course, Gordo reckoned: “This piece is going to be my favourite, most likely – it’s a bit like one of those chocolate bars with honeycomb… a Crunchie” – bring on the milk chocolate and salted caramel mousse with a honeycomb crumb!
The five-course Seasonal Game Tasting Menu (plus coffee and homemade fudge) is available only on 23 November at 8pm and costs £50 per person (£10 per person deposit on booking). They will also be a carefully selected wine flight starting with a glass of Taittinger for £27.50 on offer.
