Featuring sixteen prints by the famous Manchester illustrator, ‘Mannequin’ spans Audrey Hepburn to Marge Simpson
You can tell Stanley Chow used to be a fashion illustrator, his distinctive vector-based prints suit the genre to a tee. But the celebrated Manchester illustrator’s new exhibition Mannequin is about more than just clothes: it’s also a celebration of pop culture, art and - perhaps most importantly - female empowerment.
Even if you haven't heard of Stanley Chow, you’ve likely seen his work somewhere. After beginning as a fashion illustrator for teen magazines in 1996, Chow has since featured in everything from books to TV and global advertising campaigns.
His artwork for The White Stripe’s Icky Thump album was Grammy-nominated and he now regularly supplies artwork for The New Yorker, Manchester United, Chinese New Year and TfGM. Exhibitions span CFFCA to Great Northern - for whom he illustrated the ‘Greatest Northener’ shortlist.
Chow is now best known for his portraits, particularly of famous people, but his latest exhibition Mannequin: Fashion, Female Icons, Pop Culture and Art goes back to his fashion illustration roots.
Launched Friday 12 January at Artisan in Spinningfields, Mannequin includes sixteen vibrant female prints; particularly relevant this year, as 2018 marks 100 years since women were first allowed to vote.
In Chow’s typically playful fashion, subjects span Marge Simpson to Audrey Hepburn - but many he deliberately left ambiguous, for the reader to interpret themselves.
Set against the warm brick of Artisan’s vast dining space, they really pop, a procession of proud female figures through the ages.
Fancy one for yourself? They’re available to buy for £350 each. Alternatively, A3 prints cost £10 each and the entire collection will be on sale in a special pack for £100.
Either way, they’re well worth a good gander; whether you take advantage of Artisan’s 50% off January deal or simply pop in for a drink…
Mannequin: Fashion, Female Icons, Pop Culture and Art runs at Artisan until April
