Award-winning Indian food at very decent prices, and a true home from home

When it comes to all-day weekend dining, Bombay to Mumbai has it covered. With a casual atmosphere and award-winning food, this ‘local gem’ (Good Food Guide) is one of our favourite new lunch spots.

For those unacquainted, Bombay to Mumbai is all about modern Mumbai-inspired street food and traditional dishes - some familiar and some not. As a true ‘home from home,’ expect a hearty welcome and dishes cooked like they’d be in an Indian family household.

The Bramhall treasure has long been winning people over come evening, when it’s open from 5pm Tuesday to Sunday - including our reviewer Deanna Thomas, who said it had ‘some kind of magic.’ But weekends also see Bombay to Mumbai open at lunchtimes (12-2.45pm), making for some very tasty and great value midday munching.

We all know the frustration of seeing something we fancy on a breakfast menu, just as it’s no longer available. No chance of that at Bombay to Mumbai, where all breakfast items are served up all day long; from fluffy masala omelettes to steamed rice cakes with coconut chutney. After all, who wants to get up early on a weekend?

The rest of the menu is equally diverse, spanning street-style starters to sizzling tikkas and hearty mains: our standouts include lamb chamku, a purple-hued curry cooked with beetroot chutney and garlic, and the veggie bharli vangi - aubergine cooked in spicy peanut sauce, a popular dish at Marathi weddings - but there are many more to tickle your fancy.

Desserts offer another flavour of India, from carrot halwa cooked in milk and dry fruits to gulab jamun (sponge cake balls served in pistachio syrup), perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Visiting with kids? There are brownies and sticky toffee puds on offer too.

Bombay to Mumbai also offers takeaways, but we recommend enjoying a sit-down meal because - not only is the food stellar - the service is too.

It’s one of our favourite weekend lunch spots. We have a hunch it’ll be one of yours too…
