We head to Wilmslow to check out the radical revamp

Escape to the country – take a trip to The Stanneylands. We did. Set in rolling Cheshire parkland near Wilmslow, the country house hotel recently reopened following a £1.7m transformation and offers fantastic food, drink and 52 tasteful rooms. It’s just half an hour from the city centre, so we popped over to explore…

All wood panels, crisp white tablecloths and golden-hued and Wedgwood-blue velvet chairs, the Grill Room is quite the elegant dining space, with food to match. Purveyors of fine British fayre, the classic menu offers quality, seasonal ingredients, with Western Isles scallops and market fish of the day, and lamb and steaks from selected North West farms and aged for a minimum of 28 days by master butcher John Glynn. It provides the perfect backdrop to your special occasion.

The Tap & Pantry down the corridor offers a more casual eating experience, with nooks and crannies to hole up in and a conservatory-style glass roof. Plants and lanterns hang from the ceiling for a plantation feel, and there’s a roaring log fire, just lovely in the colder months. Bagsy a board game and sample some of the finest craft ales and spirits, or enjoy locally inspired dishes, from Anglesey calamari to Cheshire lamb hotpot.

Our favourite bit? The Franklin & Sons G&T Trolley, bringing the gin to you, from Scottish Hendrick’s to German Monkey 47. We enjoyed a Forest Gin – from nearby Macclesfield Forest – which was prepared at the table with plenty of ice, juniper berries, freshly bashed rosemary and raspberries. The verdict? Gorgeous.
