Lobster, chateaubriand, veal escalopes…it’s all half price, every single day
Normally, when a restaurant offers half price food, there are exceptions. Seafood? Nah. Steak? Practically unheard of.
Not so with Don Giovanni. Manchester’s oldest Italian restaurant is offering 50% off every a la carte dish throughout August & September 2017; top tier mains included (some supplements apply). What’s more, the offer is available every day, both weekdays and weekends.
In short, it’s such a rarity you’d be daft not to take advantage. Confidential went to check out some of the dishes you can get your thrifty mitts on, including a couple of the more luxurious…
Chateaubriand
These two 28 days-aged Cheshire beef fillets, served medium rare, were so tender and juicy we’re salivating just recalling them. Accompanying parmesan baby roast potatoes and cherry tomato salad makes for a superstar of a dish, and the meat is even carved table-side for an extra sense of occasion. With just a £10 supplement (other steak supplements are £5), this speciality cut is only £34 in August and will happily feed two - now that's a deal.
Spaghetti carbonara
OK it’s not quite as exclusive as prime steak but we couldn’t visit Don Giovanni and not have spaghetti carbonara. This is one of their popular dishes, and with good reason. Unlike the more traditional pancetta, chefs here use guanciale; a cured meat made from pork jowl or cheeks. Less salty than pancetta, this complements the crushed black peppercorns and extra creamy sauce perfectly…ultimate indulgence guaranteed.
Lobster thermidor
No you’re not hallucinating, there really is half price lobster on offer - and it’s pretty damn good. Don Giovanni does a fitting version of this sumptuous French speciality, using whole native Scottish lobster that’s delivered fresh each day. The meat is pan-fried in onion, parsley, egg yolk and cream - with a touch of tomato and English mustard - then topped with parmesan and finished in the oven. It’s even chopped up for extra convenience. We recommend sharing the large option between two - only £24.98, including £10 supplement (half a lobster has a £3 supplement) - and tucking in with a side of zucchini fries *smacks lips.*
Linguine e vongole
If you want something a little lighter, yet filling all the same, this delicate linguine is ideal; sweet cherry tomatoes, peppers, fresh clams and a drizzle of olive oil. Subtly seasoned with chilli, garlic and onion, it tastes as lovely as it looks.
Alas, that’s all we had time for but we’ll certainly be back for more. With all dishes prepared to order, using fresh seasonal ingredients, you can’t go wrong at Don Giovanni - hence why it’s now been serving the people of Manchester for over three decades.
